Drama Role-Play Adventures

3 - 5 year olds

Our Mission: To provide a positive and inclusive environment where young people are empowered, build self-confidence and develop essential life-skills through participation in the performing arts.

In our Drama Role-Play classes children use their imagination, with drama and role-playing techniques, to immerse themselves in big adventures, from exploring the magic kingdom to soaring through deep space. We use narrative-led role-play and drama adventures to make learning an unforgettable experience.

During our Drama Role-Play classes children will learn drama techniques, develop characterisation skills and build confidence and develop their stage craft skills (such as how to stand on stage when performing in front of an audience, how to project their voice). Immersion in our imaginary adventures will also help children develop high-level abstract thinking and problem-solving skills as they learn to navigate and influence the imaginary environments we create together.

During the lesson children will make a simple costume item or prop for their character which they will use during our role-play adventure and then take home to keep the learning going after the class finishes.

Early Learning Educator: All of our early learning drama classes are developed and delivered by BJ Anyos (link to Bio). BJ is the Early Learning Coordinator at Questacon, where she has worked for 24 years, and is one of Canberra’s leading early learning educators.

Parent/Carer Participation: All classes for children aged between 3 to 5 years of age are designed to be enjoyed with their parents and caregiver. When caring adults become active play partners, they greatly increase the educational value of the activity while boosting their child's confidence, language skills, and emotional connection. Therefore, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Developmental and Educational Focus Include:

  • Boosted Confidence: We provide a safe, supportive stage for children to find their voices and express their unique ideas.

  • Creative Problem Solving: Children will work together to solve problems to complete our imaginary adventures

  • Characterisation Skills: Develop characterisation skills using movement and voice

  • Improvisation and Imagination: Imagine scenarios and use improvisation and role-play to act out scenes and events..

  • Storytelling Skills: Understanding narrative structure (beginning, middle, and end) by devising and acting out stories.

  • Stage Craft: Develop performance skills, such as how to stand on stage when performing in front of an audience, how to project their voice.
