Documentary Making Program: Local Legends
Our Mission: To provide a positive and inclusive environment where young people are empowered, build self-confidence and develop essential life-skills through participation in the performing arts.
About the Program
Child Players alumnus and Canberra filmmaker Nash Nyakuengama is returning to where his own creative journey began to deliver Local Legends, a new documentary filmmaking program for young people in Year 9 and above.
Nash now runs StoryStack, a production studio that helps universities, researchers and purpose-led organisations tell important stories through film. Local Legends brings that professional experience back to the Child Players community.
Across ten Sunday afternoons in Term 4, participants will learn how to find, shoot and edit real stories using their own phones and professional editing software. This is a practical program: participants will make a new film each week before working in small crews to create a 3–5 minute documentary celebrating a “local legend” who has made a difference in their community.
The final films will premiere at a public screening at the end of the program.
No previous filmmaking experience is required. Local Legends is designed for young people who want to make things, meet people and build their confidence as storytellers. Microphones, tripods and editing computers will be provided. Participants only need access to a smartphone.
Places are limited (only 15). Parents and guardians can register their young person’s interest using the link below. (all EOIs must be submitted for consideration by Monday 14th Sept)
